MARPE: Expanding the Airway and Improving Breathing

MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) is an orthodontic treatment designed to widen the upper jaw in patients who have a narrow palate. By expanding the skeletal structure of the upper jaw, MARPE can create more space for the tongue and may help improve the overall anatomy of the upper airway.
For patients experiencing snoring, mouth breathing, nasal breathing difficulties, or symptoms associated with obstructive sleep apnea, addressing a narrow upper jaw can be an important part of a comprehensive airway-focused treatment plan. Research has shown that maxillary expansion can increase nasal airway dimensions and, in appropriately selected patients, may improve breathing and sleep-related symptoms.
How Can MARPE Help?
A narrow upper jaw can contribute to limited nasal airway space and inadequate room for the tongue. MARPE works by using small temporary anchorage devices, or miniscrews, to deliver expansion forces more directly to the palate and underlying skeletal structures. This allows expansion of the upper jaw beyond what conventional tooth-supported expanders can typically achieve in mature patients.
Potential benefits may include:
- Improved nasal breathing and airflow
- Increased nasal cavity and upper airway dimensions
- More room for proper tongue positioning
- Reduction in mouth breathing
- Possible improvement in snoring and sleep-related breathing symptoms
- Improved coordination between the upper and lower jaws
- Support for healthier facial and dental development
Who May Benefit From MARPE?
MARPE may be considered for adolescents and adults with a narrow or constricted upper jaw, particularly when this is associated with orthodontic concerns or airway-related symptoms. Every patient is different, and MARPE is not appropriate for everyone.
At Twin Teeth Orthodontics, we evaluate the relationship between the teeth, jaws, tongue, nasal airway, and overall facial structure before recommending treatment. Depending on the patient's needs, we may incorporate airway evaluation, orthodontic expansion, myofunctional therapy, and collaboration with appropriate medical or sleep specialists.
A Comprehensive Approach to Airway Health
Our goal is not simply to straighten teeth. We look at the underlying structures that influence breathing, tongue posture, jaw development, and sleep. For patients whose symptoms are related to a constricted upper jaw, MARPE may be one component of a comprehensive treatment approach designed to improve airway function and quality of life.
If you or your child experiences chronic mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, or symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing, an orthodontic airway evaluation can help determine whether jaw development and palatal width may be contributing factors.
