Tools We Use to Evaluate the Airway

A healthy airway plays a key role in proper facial growth, sleep quality, and overall health. To fully understand a patient’s airway, we use a combination of advanced technology, clinical evaluation, and collaboration with other healthcare providers. Common tools include:

  • CBCT (3D Cone Beam Imaging)
Provides a three-dimensional view of the airway, jaw position, and surrounding structures, allowing us to measure airway volume and identify areas of restriction.
  • Digital X-rays & Cephalometric Analysis
Helps evaluate jaw relationships, tongue posture, and skeletal patterns that may impact breathing.
  • Clinical Exam & Health History
We look for signs such as mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, dark circles, and daytime fatigue, along with a detailed medical and sleep history.
  • Airway & Oral Function Screening
Assesses tongue posture, lip seal, swallowing patterns, and nasal breathing habits that influence airway health.
  • Sleep Questionnaires & Screening Tools
Used to identify symptoms that may suggest sleep-disordered breathing or airway obstruction.
  • Collaboration with Medical Providers
When needed, we work closely with ENTs, sleep physicians, and myofunctional therapists to ensure a comprehensive, team-based approach.

By using these tools together, we can better understand how airway health impacts orthodontic development and create treatment plans that support both a healthy smile and healthy breathing.
